Burnham-On-Sea Somerset Millboard decking project

Located just moments from the sweeping shoreline of Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset, this modern coastal home enjoys wide skies, sea breezes and the calming rhythm of the tides. When the homeowners invited GreenBird Gardening Ltd to reimagine their outdoor space, they hoped for more than a simple refresh. They wanted a garden that felt relaxing, somewhere to linger over breakfast, to savour alfresco suppers, and to unwind late into the evening as the light softens over the estuary.

GreenBird Gardening, based in Portishead, North Somerset, responded with a design that blends coastal character with contemporary comfort. Their concept balanced soft, textural planting with a generous decked area at the heart of the garden – a sociable, open platform for dining, relaxing and enjoying the enviable seaside setting. Subtle, thoughtfully placed lighting brings the space to life after dusk, casting a gentle glow across the planting and drawing the eye towards the horizon.

This is a garden shaped for everyday ease and quiet indulgence; a space where the outdoors feels as inviting as the interior of the home itself.

A Design Rooted in Place

Coastal locations demand careful planning, thoughtful material choices and a keen eye for detail. Salt-laden air, shifting light and the occasional battering from the elements all influence how a landscape will look and last. GreenBird Gardening approached the project with these practicalities in mind, ensuring that every design decision suited both the local climate and the homeowners’ lifestyle.

Planting was chosen for movement and resilience – grasses that sway in the breeze, evergreens that lend gentle structure and perennials that echo the soft hues of the shoreline. Yet it was the expansive deck that would become the true anchor point of the new scheme. Set slightly raised to frame the views, the deck acts as a natural transition from home to garden, encouraging relaxed flow between the two spaces.

To complement the coastal palette and achieve the sense of timelessness the homeowners were hoping for, GreenBird Gardening selected Millboard’s Weathered Oak decking in Driftwood  – a shade renowned for its authentically aged appearance and soft grey-washed tones inspired by timber seasoned by the sea.

Why Weathered Oak in Driftwood?

As an Approved Millboard Installer, GreenBird Gardening knew how important it was to specify materials that blend beautiful aesthetics with long-lasting performance. The choice of Millboard’s Weathered Oak decking range was driven by both creative and practical advantages.

  • Authentic texture with a naturally aged feel

The Driftwood shade brings the character of reclaimed coastal timber without the compromises of using real wood in a high-exposure setting. Each board carries the detail of genuine hand-crafted grain, delivering a sense of history from the moment it’s laid – an immediate fit for a seaside setting where sun, salt and sand evoke stories of the past.

  • Low maintenance for effortless living

In a busy household, easy upkeep was essential. Unlike traditional timber, Millboard decking does not rot, warp or split, even when exposed to harsh coastal conditions. The homeowners were keen to avoid regular staining, oiling or sanding, allowing the garden to remain a place of pleasure rather than chores. With Millboard decking, upkeep is simple. A light seasonal sweep with a stiff brush, followed by a quick wash with warm, soapy water, is all it takes to keep your outdoor space looking beautifully cared for.

  • Exceptionally slip-resistant

With the sea air comes moisture, morning dew and the occasional summer shower. The homeowners needed a surface they could rely on all year round. Millboard decking offers an exceptionally slip-resistant surface, even when wet, providing peace of mind for family use and outdoor entertaining.

  • Durability that stands the test of time

Built from a unique resin-mineral composite, Millboard boards are designed to withstand the British weather. From winter storms to summer heat, the deck remains stable, secure and stunning.

A Garden That Comes Alive After Dark

GreenBird Gardening’s attention to detail continued beyond material choices and planting. Lighting played a central role in shaping the atmosphere of the garden. Soft uplighting accentuates the textures of the grasses and structural shrubs. Warm, low-level lighting washes gently across the Weathered Oak boards, encouraging the family to step outside long after the sun has set.

By illuminating pathways and seating areas, the garden becomes a natural extension of the home’s living space – a place for slow evenings, shared moments and the pleasure of watching the night settle over the coast.

A Homeowner’s Perspective

The transformation brought not only beauty but reassurance. As the homeowners shared:

“The end result is superb, both exceeding our expectations and allaying any worries that we had about keeping it looking good.”
