Caring for Your Millboard Deck

Maintenance Made Simple

Default alternative text

Millboard decking is designed to provide the beauty of natural timber with significantly less upkeep. Whether you're hosting garden parties, enjoying an alfresco lunch, or simply relaxing outdoors, your Millboard deck stands up to the elements with elegance and durability. Unlike traditional wood decking, Millboard does not rot, splinter, or require regular sanding, staining and sealing—making it the ultimate low-maintenance solution for stylish outdoor living.

In this article, we’ll walk you through simple yet effective ways to care for and maintain your Millboard deck, helping you keep it looking stunning all year round.

Why Millboard Is Different

Millboard decking is expertly hand-moulded from the finest oak timbers, capturing the authentic texture and grain detail of real wood—without the drawbacks. Unlike traditional timber, each board is produced from resin mineral composite, offering exceptional strength and dimensional stability.

Topped with a high-performance Lastane® surface, Millboard delivers superior slip resistance—even in wet conditions—and stands up effortlessly to everyday outdoor challenges. Highly resistant to stains, scratches, algae, and UV fading, it maintains its stunning appearance with minimal upkeep, allowing you to enjoy your outdoor space without the hassle of constant maintenance.

What Is Millboard decking made from?

General Cleaning Guidelines

Regular cleaning is key to preserving the appearance and performance of your decking. We recommend cleaning your Millboard deck at least twice a year, or more frequently if it is located near trees or high-traffic areas.

Step-by-Step Cleaning:

  1. Brush Off Surface Dirt
Start by using a stiff-bristled brush (natural bristles around 50mm work best) to remove debris like leaves, soil, and other organic matter.
  2. Apply a Cleaning Solution
Use a mild household detergent mixed with warm water. You can also use a designated decking cleaner such as Jeyes Decking Power. Avoid harsh solvents or chemicals unless specified for particular stains.
  3. Scrub and Rinse
Wet the deck surface 10–15 minutes beforehand, apply the cleaning solution, and scrub thoroughly. Rinse with plenty of clean water to finish.
  4. Optional: Pressure Washing
If using a pressure washer, ensure the PSI does not exceed 2,000 and use a 40–60° fan tip. Keep the nozzle at least 300mm away to avoid damaging the surface or exposing fixings.

Handling Common Stains

Life happens—spills, marks, and outdoor messes are inevitable. Thankfully, Millboard products are engineered to resist most surface stains. However, prompt attention ensures the best results.

Grease, Oil, and Food Stains

These should be removed as quickly as possible with water, a mild detergent, and a soft cloth or brush. For tougher grease, Selden F014 can be used in dilutions ranging from 1:40 (general cleaning) to 1:20 (heavy duty), or 1:50 for pressure washer use.

Cement and Construction Residue

If your deck is exposed to plaster, concrete dust, or other building materials, start with Selden F014. If residue remains, switch to Selden H002 (1:10 dilution, or 1:5 for heavy duty). Remember to rinse thoroughly and never let cleaning solutions dry on the surface.

Rust, Limescale, and Tannins

These can come from red soil, hard water, or natural foliage. Use Zep Commercial Lime and Rust Remover or Bar Keepers Friend to lift these stains. Selden H002 is also effective for persistent cases.

Tree Sap

Sap can be challenging once dried. Try applying oil soap, letting it sit for 15 minutes, and scrubbing well. Multiple treatments may be required for older or thicker patches.

Seasonal Considerations

In Winter

Decks can be slippery with frost or ice. Use white salt (not rock salt, which contains grit and clay) to treat icy areas. Remove snow with a stiff broom or plastic shovel—never metal, as it may scratch the surface.

In Summer

Like any surface, darker boards can get hot under direct sunlight. Consider using footwear, especially on hot days, and avoid placing reflective glass nearby that might intensify heat buildup.

Special Situations

New Installations

Boards may appear shiny at first due to the release agent used during manufacturing. This will wear off naturally within 6–8 weeks of weather exposure. You can speed up the process by washing with warm soapy water and a stiff brush shortly after installation.

Fire Pits and Heaters

While patio heaters are safe, fire pits should never be placed directly on the deck. Use a fireproof base like a porcelain tile and remove any embers immediately to prevent marks.

Sharp Objects and Furniture

Drag marks can be caused by chair legs, planter pots, or metal bases. Use protective pads under furniture and lift items instead of dragging.

Algae

Where dirt and moisture accumulate, algae may begin to grow. It’s cosmetic and easily treatable. Clean the surface thoroughly or use an algae-specific cleaner like Algon for persistent patches.

Pro Tips for Lasting Beauty

  • Avoid using solvent-based cleaners unless advised for a specific stain.
  • Test all cleaners in an inconspicuous area first.
  • Protect your deck from nearby building or landscaping work—especially with fresh installs.
  • Clean regularly to prevent long-term buildup and staining.
