Hamilton House

A Cheshire New Build Cabin That Belongs to Its Landscape

Settling Into the Forest Edge

Set on the fringes of Delamere Forest in Cheshire, Hamilton House sits within a landscape that draws walkers, cyclists and nature lovers throughout the year. With open views stretching across the surrounding countryside, this is a setting that asks something particular of any new building, not to impose, but to belong.

For the clients, that was always the guiding principle. The ambition was to create a dream family home that felt at ease in its environment: a retreat rather than a statement, comfortable in its surroundings both on the day of completion and for decades to come.

Designed to Disappear Into the Scenery

The cabin-style design draws on the traditions of rural and woodland architecture; steeply pitched rooflines, natural material choices and a human scale that avoids grandeur in favour of warmth. From the outset, the design team wanted the exterior to read as something that had always been there, rather than something recently placed.

Achieving that required materials that could carry the look of natural timber without the high maintenance demands that can be associated with it. With the home exposed to the variable Cheshire climate, performance was as important as appearance.

A Considered Material Palette

The exterior treatment brings together Millboard’s Envello Board & Batten+ cladding in Antique Oak across the main elevations, with Envello Shadow Line+ in Golden Oak used on the soffits as a contrasting accent. The two profiles work together to build a sense of depth and texture: the vertical rhythm of the Board & Batten+ gives the walls a strong, structured character, while the horizontal Shadow Line+ panels at the eaves provide a quieter, tonal contrast.

The choice of Antique Oak and Golden Oak sits comfortably alongside the stonework used elsewhere on the build. Rather than competing with hard landscaping and natural masonry, the cladding complements them; part of a coherent, mixed-material approach that grounds the home in its setting. The result is a façade that shifts gently with the light throughout the day, echoing the warmth of natural wood without requiring the upkeep that timber can require.

Built in Eleven Months

Hamilton House was completed in eleven months, a tight programme for a bespoke new build of this ambition. Delivered by Fox Red Developments alongside a trusted network of trades and suppliers, the project is a demonstration of what careful planning and quality partnerships can achieve. The timber frame construction provided a reliable structural platform, and the use of Millboard cladding allowed the exterior finish to be installed efficiently without compromising on the quality of the final result.

Long-Term Performance by Design

Millboard’s Envello cladding range is engineered for the demands of the UK climate. Manufactured from a resin mineral-based composite, it resists warping, splitting and fading – common challenges for timber in exposed outdoor settings. It requires no painting, staining or sealing, making it a genuinely low-maintenance choice for a home that its owners want to enjoy rather than maintain.

For a family home near a working forest, that durability is a practical as well as an aesthetic consideration. Hamilton House is built to look this good for the long term.

The Finished Result

Hamilton House is a quiet success. It sits comfortably in a landscape that could easily have overwhelmed it, and it does so through considered design choices rather than compromise. The blending of Millboard cladding with natural stonework, the play of profile and tone across the elevations, and the careful relationship between building and setting all speak to the ambition that shaped the project from the start.

A family home. Built to last.
