When the All England Lawn Tennis Club set out to deliver the\u00a0<em>Wimbledon Master Plan<\/em>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0a decade-long redevelopment to\u00a0optimize\u00a0the guest experience and future-proof the grounds,\u00a0the transformation of\u00a0No.1 Court\u00a0became one of its defining chapters.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the heart of the project was a clear ambition:\u00a0to\u00a0enhance the venue\u2019s character while ensuring it could serve modern audiences with comfort,\u00a0efficiency\u00a0and effortless style. Their brief was to reimagine No.1 Court both functionally and aesthetically. This involved introducing&nbsp;a state-of-the-art&nbsp;retractable roof to protect play from unpredictable British weather, alongside a complete reconfiguration of the spectator experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two new seating tiers added space for another 900 guests, taking the total capacity to 12,400. A generous two-level public plaza replaced Court 19, creating a sociable meeting point and a welcoming threshold between the grounds and the stadium. Every choice was shaped by an understanding of how visitors move, gather, and soak up the atmosphere of Championship tennis.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The finished scheme blends naturally with the rest of the site, balancing modern upgrades with a clear respect for the Club\u2019s established look and feel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-typestyle-uppercase\" id=\"h-a-build-on-an-extraordinary-scale-nbsp\"><strong>A Build on an Extraordinary Scale<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Delivering a project of this magnitude required formidable coordination. More than 400 specialists worked on site across 2018 and early 2019, contributing&nbsp;2.2 million hours&nbsp;to ensure the stadium was ready for the No.1 Court Celebration on 19 May.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scale of materials alone tells its own story:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2,300 tonnes of steel&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>130 km of electrical cable&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>40 miles of scaffolding&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sourced globally, every component was chosen for its strength, longevity and suitability for a world-leading event space. When the doors opened, the finished court was unveiled live on BBC One, accompanied by exhibition matches and appearances from tennis legends Martina Navratilova and John McEnroe. These surfaces would define the stadium\u2019s approach routes and exterior feel, playing a crucial role in the visitor experience. The material needed to offer the warmth and familiarity of natural timber while delivering the resilience required for a venue that welcomes thousands of\u00a0visitors\u00a0each day.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After exploring a wide range of possibilities, the design team selected\u00a0Millboard\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.www.millboard.com\/en-gb\/composite-cladding-collections\/shadow-line\/golden-oak\/MCL360G\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shadow Line +\u00a0Golden Oak\u00a0<\/a>siding.
